The Project was started all because of an accident.
I was at the Southwest Library just to volunteer as a book shelver, and for that I needed an orientation. But it turns out, whoever told me that the orientation was that day, was wrong. But the head librarian decided to walk me around the library and talk to me a bit about why I was volunteering and what my background was. As she got to know me, she learned about my long time experience as a blogger and she wanted to use that background, to better advantage the library.
She wondered if I would be willing to teach a bunch of teens about blogging.
Of course I said yes! But why not make it an interactive experience and let them run a blog together?
Less than a week later, I was at ALA14 and I made sure to talk up a storm about the project. Several publishers are interested enough to donate books, Among those are:
Entangled Teen
Sourcebooks
Disney Hyperion
Also, several individuals have donated to the project
(more to be listed)
I would also like to build up the program in such a way that other libraries can use the program.
so far, the thought process has only made it to some sort of webcam/youtube idea. Hopefully, by the time the program gets off the ground, other libraries will have easy access to the lessons.
I'm in the beginning stages of creating a curriculum (really, just a book of calendars, memes hints, and tips for them to use, as well as a log they can use to track their usernames and passwords for sites.)
I want this program to efficiently teach teens about the wonderful ways they can effect the industry, right now, as they are; teens.
I want them to know that they can turn ideas and thoughts in to words and they can build wonderful things with those words.
At the project's blogsite ( http://projectsouthwest.blogspot.com/ ) You can donate via paypal. All the funds will go towards printing the books and buying supplies for the project. Anything leftover will be kept for the next years class.
